Gerald (Jerry) Philip Eby was born March 1, 1929 in Bend, Oregon to Herbert Philip Eby and Bessie Hill Eby. He was raised on their dairy farm just north of Redmond. Jerry had 3 sisters, Dorothy, Fay, and Lola, and one brother, Craig. He attended Tetherow Butte grade school (a one room school house) through 8th grade, then graduated from Redmond High School in 1947. Being a farm boy, he was active in 4-H and at the 1943 fair won the 4-H co-op calf. He went to Oregon State College, majoring in Agricultural Economics and graduated in 1951. Jerry was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and it was while planning one of their functions that he met his future wife, Barbara Denton. She was at OSC studying nursing. He was in ROTC and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the army. Jerry and Bobbie were married June 9, 1951 in Hillsboro, Oregon. Their daughter, Christina, was born the following May and 3 days later Jerry shipped out for Korea. He was an aerial forward observer with over 80 combat missions over enemy lines. After leaving active service he served in the Army Reserves for many years retiring as a Colonel. In 1957, he and his wife bought Lake Grove Garden Center. Over the years they added a floral shop and Christmas World. Jerry really enjoyed helping customers be successful gardeners and bring beauty into their lives. Eventually he sold the business to his daughter and son-in-law and retired.
After retirement, he continued to help at the store with projects and at busy times. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and was a passionate fisherman. It started with bank and lake trout fishing. Then the boat got bigger until he was fishing the Columbia and Buoy 10 for salmon, sturgeon, and crab. In the winter, it was steelhead in the Willamette. He also spent a lot of time in his garden and was especially proud of his Asian pear trees.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Christina Eby Eddy (Darryl), and Michael P. Eby, grandchildren Ryan G. Eddy (Jamie), Erin Eddy Lisser (Kevin), and Amber Eby Mabus (Seth), great-grandchildren Noah and Caleb Mabus, and his sister Fay Eby Hagman Drake. He also has a large extended family.
