Born on April 9, 1927, Gerald (Chuck) Rittenberg passed away on February 9, 2017 with his wife Donna and their three children at his side. Chuck and Donna had just celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in January. He is survived by three children: Larry and wife Kathleen Rittenberg, Sharon and husband Bill Mize, and Diane Sue Rittenberg; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Unfortunately one other grandchild passed away too early.
Chuck was born on a farm in Standish, Michigan and grew up with a great passion for hunting, fishing, and enjoying life along the Rifle River and Saginaw Bay. Donna was born on the south side of the river, and Chuck on the north side. Although we knew it was not true, he always kidded that Donna swam across the river to catch him. Although times were tough, Chuck enjoyed exploring and hunting with his young friend, Francis Lentz.
Gerald loved the outdoors and that took him to a career as an operating engineer. He spent most of his career operating heavy equipment for Eisenhower Construction Company of Lansing, MI. He enjoyed a great cadre of other operators who all worked together to create one of the best construction crews in the state.
Gerald loved gardening. A one acre garden was more than he (and his family, and his neighbors) would need, but that didn't stop him. He loved the "magic of nature" where those seeds and plants would explode into a bounty of delicious vegetables. He and Donna would spend many a day shelling peas, snipping beans, and then canning or freezing the vegetables that weren't given away. It was one of the simple things in life that he loved to do.
Gerald and Donna loved touring the country in their Ford Vans with their friends the Monroe's. They have visited all except two of the 50 states. Friends were special to him. Everyone who knew him loved his sense of humor.
It cannot go without saying that he was always there for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was the "rock" of the family. Always "Mr. Fix-it", he was also a great counselor to all of us - at any age.
Gerald was a life-long member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ), and was always proud that his Father had been an Elder in the Church. He also was equally proud of his 62 year membership of Local 324 of the Operating Engineers of Michigan.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in Williamston, MI on Monday, February 13, 2017. Visitation will be held at the same location on Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and again from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. and one hour prior to service.

Those who desire making contributions in lieu of flowers are encouraged to contribute to the Community of Christ Church, Rose Lake Branch c/o Jean Valley, 5777 Buena Parkway, Haslett, MI 48840
