Gertrude "Trudy" Maria Espinosa, age 91, passed away in her cherished Seaside home of 57 years on March 29, 2017. Born in the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, she lost her father as a child and her brother, Josef, was killed in June 1944 in Caen, France. She lived with her mother Bertha. After World War II, as a young woman, she arrived home one day after work to find her home, confiscated by the Czech government. They were ordered to a train station with only the clothing that was hanging on the clothesline. Thus began a three year odyssey, trying to find a country that would accept them. Finally they arrived in Chicago as "Displaced Persons". She found work quickly in the accounting department at Merchandise Mart, while her mother worked as a seamstress. She met and married Luis Espinosa, US Army, before returning with his Army transfer to Munich, Germany. There, she and her mother reveled in the birth of their two daughters before returning to the US and settling in Seaside, California in 1959.
Trudy lived life for the great adventure and the great outdoors that lead her to six continents and frequent hiking adventures locally and around this country with the her beloved Sierra Club, Elder Hostel and Golden 55. She leaves behind her friends in these clubs as well as the German/Austrian ladies singing group, her InShape swimming friends and many acquaintances she has made over the years. A few of her many passions included playing the piano and accordion, German crossword puzzles, swimming and socializing at InShape Monterey, and being with family. Her volunteer efforts included work with her senior citizen groups and over 25 years of volunteer service with the Monterey County Peace Officer's Association.
She is survived by her daughters Dianne (Richard) Dampier and Evelyne (Joe) Anzini, grandchildren Michelle (Phil) Haayer and Michael (Gabriela) Dampier, relatives in Germany, Klaus (Hannelore) Hanisch, Reinfried (Gerda) Kratzer and many more. She will be interred in Monterey with her mother, Bertha Hanisch, who preceded her in death on January 13, 1969. In keeping with her thirst for adventure, no funeral will be held. Instead she wished for a celebration of life at one her favorite social hangouts: Oldemeyer Center in Seaside, CA, May 27, 2017 at 1pm.
The family would like to thank the staff at InShape, Monterey, for the many years of joy you provided Mom. You treated her like royalty and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about you and your facility. She always said, "If it wasn't for InShape" she wouldn't have been able to continue enjoying life as long as she did. She was always disappointed when she couldn't go to InShape and socialize with her pool buddies.
In honor of Trudy and in her memory, live life to the fullest. Go out and explore, take a hike, join a fitness club, and best of all do this with your family and friends. Well-wishers may post their comments on the Bayside Community Mortuary, Seaside CA, website.
