Giles (J.D.) Dominic Ostdiek, age 80, of Fresno, California passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, October 9, 2017.

Born April 8, 1937 in Indianola, Nebraska to Ferdinand and Rose (Schutte) Ostdiek. J.D. was the youngest of 12 children and was raised on the family farm in Kansas. He graduated from Bird City High School and continued on to business school. His career in sales started with him driving his Tom's Roasted Peanuts truck in Colorado. JD went on to buy a distributorship of FritoLay and Archway Cookies in Great Falls, Montana.

While in Montana, J.D. met his wife of 52 years, Marilyn (Meyers). They were married on June 26, 1965. They moved to Fresno, California and together raised 8 children.

J.D. was a well-known, loved,, and successful businessman in the Insurance industry. After working for Washington National, he established J.D. Ostdiek Insurance and developed many strong ties amongst his colleagues in the field. He enjoyed getting to know and working with his clients. He always provided honest and personal service to each and every one.

He was involved in many community organizations, including the Elks Lodge, the South Fresno Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Professional Business Club of Fresno.

His greatest accomplishment was his family and he took great pride in all of their achievements. He loved attending all of his children's and grandchildren's sporting events, where he was their biggest fan. He spent many years as a coach for his children and their friends. You could often find him on the soccer field or in the basketball gym, still with his tie on, just running from the office to catch a practice or a game.

Some of Dad's favorite things were Tuesday night dinners at DiCicco's, attending his grandchildren's ball games, Sunday night family BBQ's, donuts after 8:00 o'clock mass, golfing, trips to the coast with Mom, road trips to visit his family in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado, and of course, the annual family golf/beach trip to Pismo Beach.

He enjoyed life to the fullest and was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a devout Catholic and he was very proud to have been able to provide a parochial school education for his children. He was a genuine, kind, and humble man.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Rose, his sisters, Loraine Stevens, Irene Reining, Roberta O'Leary, Irma Johnson, and his brothers, Gerald, Alvin, Walt, Louis, and Raymond.
