Gladys Currie, 96, Colorado City, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, May 8, 2017, with her loving family by her side.
She was born on September 12, 1920 in Point, Texas to Howell and Tennie Rayburn Proctor.
Gladys was a woman who experienced a lot in her younger years. Having grown up during the Great-Depression and losing her mother at a very young age, she and her siblings learned what it was like to appreciate God, family, and everything that they earned through hard-work and sacrifice. At the age of 17 she met and married the love of her life in Colorado City, Mr. Mearl Currie who preceded her in death in November of 2003, together they raised their family and enjoyed many memoriable moments. Church was a key part of her life, as Gladys was one of the charter members of the Calvary Baptist Church of Colorado City.
Gladys enjoyed 28 years of service to her community as an employee of the CISD where she worked in food service at the Kelly Elementary School, 15 years of which she was the manager. Cooking was an important part of Gladys' life, whether it was cooking a holiday meal, coming over for family gatherings, or if you just stopped by for a quick visit, you were not allowed to leave her house hungry. Gladys took great joy in seeing others happy, going for walks, and a good cup of coffee.
Gladys is survived by her children Marlena Rice and husband Floyd of Westbrook and Larry Currie and wife Kathy of Granbury, by her grandchildren Julie Proctor, Debra King, Charles Rice, Sharla Sharp, and Amy Jordan. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren Russell Whitesides, Kelsey Sealey, Courtney Proctor, Kingslee King, Laremi King, MaKena King, Madison Rice, Jakob Sharp, Olivia Sharp, and Conall Jordan, as well as by her great-great-grandchildren Finn Whitesides, Gabe Whitesides, and Gavin Halfmann.
A funeral service will be held for Gladys on Friday, May 12th at 10 am at Calvary Baptist Church in Colorado City with Pastor Paul Smith officiating, interment will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery.
The family will hold a visitation at Kiker Seale Funeral Home on Thursday night from 5-7 pm.
