Gloria Dean Elrod England, 81, of Williamsburg, died January 14, 2018, at Sentara Hospital.
Born February 5, 1936, in Hopewell, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Joel Thomas (Goode) Elrod and Gertrude Blythe Elrod.

A resident of Williamsburg since 1964, she enjoyed gardening, reading, entertaining, and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member in the Williamsburg United Methodist Church since the 1970s, serving in the Respite Care program, first as an aide and then as a member of the Respite Care Board of Directors. With the United Methodist Women, she held numerous offices in the Friendship Circle and helped coordinate the biennial bazaar to support local and global mission efforts. Prior to joining the Methodist Church, she served as an elder and a Sunday School teacher of the Presbyterian church in Williamsburg.

In the Williamsburg community, she participated in the Queens Lake Garden Club and Junior Woman's Club, where she established the Busy Bee Reading Club and helped with floats for the Williamsburg Christmas Parade. She was a founding member of An Occasion for The Arts in Colonial Williamsburg, now in its 50th year, and also volunteered at the Williamsburg Community Hospital, in local schools, and as poll watcher in local elections.

Prior to retiring in 1996, she was employed at the College of William and Mary, first as data entry clerk in the Registrar's Office and later, after successfully coordinating the data transfer of written to digital records, she was named assistant registrar for computer systems. Earlier, she worked as secretary of the Biochemistry Department at Virginia Tech, and secretary of Prince George High School. She attended Saint Elizabeth School of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia, and local schools in Hopewell, Virginia.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Raymond England; son Raymond England, Jr. and fianc Alyssa Anderson of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; son Tom England and wife Marlene of Woodsboro, Maryland; and grandchildren Kyla, Samantha, Michael, and Christopher England.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA. A service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 19, at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg VA. Interment will follow.
