Gloria M. Van Slaars, 89, passed into God's loving arms on Friday, January 12, 2018 in San Angelo, Texas. She was born in San Angelo on November 14, 1928 to Joe and Anita Havel Berger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday, January 15 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 20 E. Beauregard San Angelo TX. Rosary will be held at 4pm on Sunday, January 14 at Johnson's Funeral Home, 435 W. Beauregard.

Gloria married Robert W. Van Slaars on August 7, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church. She was a homemaker and worked for Hicks and Puckett Hardware. She and Robert lived in the San Angelo community until 1958, when they moved first to Columbus, OH; then Abilene, TX; Lincoln, NE and Dover, DE. They returned to San Angelo in March 1967 where she has been living ever since. Robert retired at Goodfellow AFB in 1968.

Gloria was the oldest of seven sisters. Her Catholic faith was a priority in raising her own family. Over the years, she volunteered at the Catholic Outreach Store, served as a room mother, and attended Women's Bible Study. Our mother loved Elmer Kelton novels, George Strait and the Texas Rangers baseball team. She and dad enjoyed many a trip through the Texas countryside, especially when wild flowers were blooming. They traveled to France several times, to visit Robert's family. Cooking and baking for her family brought her great joy, especially for birthdays and holidays. Mom enjoyed the flowers she grew in her yard as well as watching the birds there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and infant son Thomas William Van Slaars, her father and mother-in-law Sidney and Fernande Van Slaars, her step-father Jess Best, as well as by her sister Lucille Bowles, brothers-in-law Mike Freeman and Henry Van Slaars, and nephew Bob Bowles.

Gloria is survived by her four children: Kathy (Gary) Hardgrave, Sonora, Tx; Patti (Greg) Spruell, Joe Van Slaars and Jeanne (Rob) Miller, all of San Angelo. Six grandchildren: Kristen (Sam) Kaufman, Austin, Tx; Ryan (Tracy) Hardgrave, Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; Chad (Jade) Spruell, Austin , Tx; Austin Spruell, San Angelo, Tx; Michaela (Marcus) Trew, Frisco, Tx; and Sgt. Matthew Miller, USMC, San Diego, Ca. Six great-grandchildren:

Baton Rouge, La; JoAnne Freeman, Colorado Springs, Co; Coleen (Don) Cooper, New Braunfels, Tx; Carolyn Singleton, San Angelo, TX; and Ginny (Jack) Jackson, Wingate, Tx. Robert's sisters are Marilyn (Jean-Marie) Goisque and Janine Van Slaars, all of France. She was Aunt Gloria to many nieces and nephews, both in the States and in France.
