Grace-George "GG" (Koehler) Pancake, 100, of Staunton, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Shenandoah Nursing Home in Fishersville. She was born at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA on July 25, 1915, a daughter of the late George R. and Annie Louise Koehler.
GG graduated from Duke University in 1937, and for several years following college, was the writer and producer of her own radio show on home cooking and entertaining, first in Kansas City, MO, and later in New York City.
On May 2, 1942, GG married Lt. Frank R. Pancake (U.S. Army Air Corps) of Staunton at Borinquen Field in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. She spent the next 24 years as a U.S. Air Force wife, raising a family. She lived abroad in Paris, France and the Panama Canal Zone during foreign duty assignments of her husband at NATO and USAF Southern Command, respectively.
Following her return to Staunton in 1969, GG was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, a member and officer of the Augusta Garden Club, a founding and lifetime member of the Historic Staunton Foundation, a strong supporter of the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Presidential Library, and a member of the Staunton Country Club.
GG will be remembered by her family and friends as an avid bridge player, enthusiastic world traveler and gracious hostess.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Frank R. Pancake, former Mayor of Staunton and Professor of Political Science at Mary Baldwin College; a daughter, Meredith Meade Pancake; a brother, George Richard Koehler, Jr. and a sister, Lillian Louise "Peggy" Koehler.
Survivors include her son, Richard Robbins Pancake of Alexandria, VA.; a granddaughter, Alexandra Grace Pancake of Washington D.C.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Following a private burial, a memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 29,2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E Frederick St, Staunton, VA 24401, with Rev. Karen Allamon officiating.
There will be no public view or visitation at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in GG's memory to the First Presbyterian Church or the Historic Staunton Foundation, 20 South New Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Shenandoah Nursing Home and Baldwin Park Assisted Living in Staunton for their loving care of GG.
