Reverend Gregory Steven Petruska

On Sunday, September 24, 2017 Father Gregory passed on to eternal life at the Promise Hospital at 1:00pm.

Father Gregory Petruska was born in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania on September 1, 1927, the son of the late Andrew Petruska and Mary Ciparik.

After completing his elementary and high school studies in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, he attended St. Procopius College and Monastery in Lisle, Illinois. Father Petruska received his B.A. Degree in 1949 from St. Procopius College, and he continued Post Graduate Studies in Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After completing three years in Theology at St. Procopius Seminary he entered SS Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he completed his fourth year in Theology.

On February 2, 1953, the feast of the Presentation of Our Lord into the Temple, The Most Reverend Daniel Ivancho, D.D. ordained him to the Priesthood, at SS Cyril and Methodius Seminary.

He served as assistant pastor in the old St. John Cathedral in Homestead, Pennsylvania and as pastor at St. Nicholas Church in McKeesport, Pennsylvania and Holy Spirit in Binghamton, New York.

In 1955 Father Gregory was sent to be administrator of St. Mary's Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Joliet, Illinois for 33 years.

He first remodeled the church and installed Byzantine paintings. Then he built a parish school, an auditorium, a convent and St. Basil's Hall.

He was the principal and a teacher for seventh and eight grades with the Benedictine Sisters until they left in 1968. He then requested Reverend James B. Reuter, S.J. in the Philippines for a teacher from St. Paul University, Philippines Miss Angelica Villarin.

In 1989 he moved to California and was a dedicated teacher at Taper Avenue School Los Angeles Unified School District.

He was predeceased by his brother Andrew Petruska and sisters Helen Petruska and Margaret Petruska. He is survived by his sister Sister Maria Petruska, OSBM, brother Father Christopher Petruska, sister Terri P. Ortmann (Bill), nieces Michele and Terri Lynn, Andrew's daughter Janet P. Hamilton (Russ), and Beth, sons Mark Petruska and Andrew Petruska Jr. and grandnieces and nephew.
