Mr. Grover Carlyle Taylor, age 95, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

Born in Nash County on December 17, 1919 to the late Kader W. and Onie Joyner Taylor, Grover grew up in Nash County, tempered by the Great Depression, which taught him early to be resourceful, learn to do things for himself, and to save for a rainy day. After the divorce of his parents when he was very little, his mother, remarried when he was in high school, and the family moved to Rocky Mount. Grover graduated from Georgia Tech University. He enjoyed his years there, always cheering for the white and gold throughout his lifetime. He visited his college roommate in Baltimore, where he met his roommate’s cousin, Burnett R. Rivers. They fell in love and married in December of 1944. After the war, they made their home in Rocky Mount, raising a family and enjoying 68 wonderful years together.

Grover joined ROTC at Georgia Tech, serving after graduation in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to Rocky Mount, remaining in the Army Reserve for many years. He taught electronics and related subjects for over twenty years at Wilson Technical Institute. He received his Masters Degree in Education from NC State University while he was teaching. Grover and Burnie were long-time members of West Haven Presbyterian Church, where Grover was active as a Deacon, serving as Treasurer of the church for many years. He was also called upon to fix anything that needed fixing, especially taking loving care of the steeple chimes over the years. He enjoyed helping anyone whenever he could and took great pride in having a wide variety of self-taught skills. He loved to read non-fiction and loved to learn new things.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Burnett R. Taylor and his sister, Esther Wake Joyner.

He is survived by his son, William Carlyle Taylor of the home; daughter, Margaret Taylor Park and her husband Michael of Raleigh; grandchildren, Christopher Michael Park and his wife Marisa, Catherine Margaret Park Zachary and husband Frank; and one great-grandson, Christopher James Park.

Visitation will be held at held at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 25th, 2015 at West Haven Presbyterian Church on the corner of West Haven Blvd. and Hammond St. with services following at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary with Sam Codington and Dan Davis, officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow at Pineview Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank his loving caregivers of the past several years, especially Olivia Richardson, Marion Harrison, Gloria Smith, Tanaisha McNair, Michelle Lane, Deniece Knight, and Bre Matchem. Grover was determined to take care of his wife as long as he was able, and then insisted that the caregivers concentrate their efforts on her as long as she lived. But he very much appreciated all the care they gave him these past couple of years and was quite fond of them.

Donations may be made to West Haven Presbyterian Church, Rocky Mount, NC or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
