Gwendolyn Dale Durrett, 69, of Ruther Glen, VA departed this life peacefully on Feb. 1, 2018, after her courageous fight with a long illness. She was surrounded by a room full of loved ones, that will miss her deeply.

Born, Nov.22, 1948, she was the daughter of Addison and Alberta Burruss Durrett. Gwen was a brilliant student graduating at 17 in 1966 from CT Smith High School as valedictorian and in 1970, she graduated from Radford College. She then began her teaching career at Bowling Green Senior School and on to Caroline High School in Physical Education, Health and Driver's Education for the duration of 48 years. She was invaluable as the longtime coach for softball, basketball, track and field, field hockey and volleyball. Generations of students have been blessed with her guidance. She spent her life being a best friend to so many people and enjoyed playing softball more than can be expressed. She also loved music and being a part of choirs throughout her life.

She is survived by her brother, Warren Durrett (Shirley), sister-in-law, Linda Durrett, sisters, Risa Durrett and Valarie Durrett Carawan; nieces, Angela Cecil (Frank), Karen Mayo(Mike), Lisa Stevens, Kristen Booth (Ross), April Hodges (Marshall); nephews, Kenny Durrett and Charles Carawan. The family wants to express great gratitude to her special friend, Darlene McDaniels and also Dorothy Milici for their loving support.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018 at County Line Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gwen Durrett Scholarship Fund, c/o Warren Durrett, 18526 Chilesburg Road, Beaverdam, VA. 23015.
