"Dick" Luke, 83, of Ankeny, passed away at home on Friday, August 3rd, 2018.
A memorial service will be held at 5p.m., Wednesday August 8, 2018 at Saylorville Church (6429 NW 6th Dr, Des Moines), where Dick and Carol have been long-time members. A visitation will be held from 7-9pm following the memorial service.
Dick donated his body to Des Moines University for research. Cremation and burial will take place at a later date, with interment at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.
Dick was born to Harold and Bonnie (Roberts) Luke in Chariton, Iowa on January 24, 1935. He graduated from Chariton High School, and was senior class president. He was honored to attend Boys' State in 1952. He married Carol Shanks in 1954, and the couple raised four children.
His early working years included: Hy-Vee, Young's in Chariton; salesman for Formica Corporation; self-employed floor covering installer; and Fulton's Floor Covering. In 1967, Dick and his brother, Larry, started Luke Brothers Floor Covering, now owned by the next generation of Luke brothers: Mike and Scott.
He enjoyed many hobbies: fishing, building remote-control airplanes, playing baseball/softball, canoe trips to Canada with sons/friends.
Left to honor Dick's memory are his wife of 63 years, Carol; their children Mike (Robin) Luke, Cyndi (Mark) Brugioni, Scott (Heather) Luke; grandchildren, Sarah (Randall Lenze) Luke, Dawn Brugioni, Allyson (Brandon) Goff, Marianna Brugioni, Adam (Emily) Luke, Quentin (Gabbie) Luke, Mira Luke; great-grandchildren Jackson, Clover, Juniper, Clarke, and one on the way; brother Larry (Judy) Luke; sister-in-law Maggie Shanks; and nieces / nephews.
He was preceded in death by son, Jim, in 1977; and brother-in-law Norris Shanks.
