Hans Reinhardt Heinz passed away November 2, 2017, after a battle with cancer. He was born on November 13,1938 to German parents in the town of Bachki-Jarek, Yugoslavia, in the Balkan region settled by ethnic Germans during the 18th century. During the later stages of the Second World War the German speaking citizens were forced to evacuate their towns due to approaching communist forces advancing through Hungary. After a month long sojourn in a horse drawn covered wagon and on a river barge he, his mother and
grandparents were settled in a refugee camp in southern Germany. After the war they were declared
"displaced persons" and allowed to emigrate to the United States.
Heinz was eight years old when he and his family settled in St. Louis, where he was educated in the
Lutheran school system. He was an all-city high school football quarterback and awarded a scholarship
to Valparaiso University in Indiana. Upon graduation in 1962 with a Master's Degree, he entered the Marine Corps and was
commissioned a Second Lieutenant. As an infantry officer he served 22 years on active duty in various
command and staff positions. During the Vietnam War he was severely wounded while serving as a rifle
company commander in the 5th Marine Regiment. Retiring from the Marines in 1984, he became a
JROTC instructor at Culpeper County High School. While there he also coached the soccer team and was
an assistant football coach. In 2001 Heinz retired full time and travelled extensively.
His wife of 42 years, Elizabeth J. (Betty) Heinz, passed away in 2006. Heinz is survived by his special
