Harold Elmer Althouse, 93, of Douglassville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2017. He was the loving husband of 42 years to Virginia "Ginny" (Behm) Althouse. The couple married in their Douglassville home on June 29, 1974.

Born on December 12, 1923, Harold was a son of the late Edwin B. and Sallie A. (Kauffman) Althouse. He was drafted in 1942 and joined the Navy. He served during WWII until 1945. He was employed with the Iron Workers Union Local 420 for 42 years before retiring in 1987.

Harold attended St. Paul's UCC and help organize and volunteer with the Greenfields Fire Co. and Goodwill Fire Co. He was very active with the Cub Scouts and was a member of the Amity Athletic Club. He was also a member of the Wodenschiere County Club.

Harold was known as "Mr. Fixit" and could tell a great story. He was a licensed pilot and he took pleasure in flying. He enjoyed line dancing and swimming but most of all he loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to Ginny, Harold is survived by two children: Scott E. Althouse and his wife, Donna M. (Baer) of Harrisburg and Lorraine R. (Althouse) Benner and her husband, Daryl C. of Flying Hills; two step children: Lori A. (Labe) Miller and her husband, Ronald of Douglassville and Garry R. Labe and his wife, Carol S. (Yergey) of Douglassville; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Also surviving is his last remaining sibling, Joan Althouse of Dauberville; son-in-law, Russell R. Ruth and sister-in-law, Shirley (Lutz) Althouse.

Harold is predeceased by a step daughter: Cynthia L. (Labe) Ruth and eight siblings: Mary (Althouse) Burden, Anna (Althouse) Parzanese, Ida (Althouse) Prutzman, Ruth (Althouse) Reber, Helen (Althouse) Keller, Clarence Althouse, Wilson Althouse and John Althouse.

Services for Harold will be at 11am on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 in Auman's Inc. Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading, PA 19606. Family and friends will be received in the funeral home on Tuesday from 9:30 to 11am. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reading.
