Springfield, IL - Harold Snowden Meek passed away August 31, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 12, 1930 in Springfield to the late Albert Meek and Josephine Snowden Meek. He was also preceded in death by seven brothers, three sisters, two nephews, and one niece. He attended Cathedral High School for two years, and then finished his high school education at Inkster High School in Inkster, MI. He married Susan Gladys George September 6, 1969. She survives.
During most of his work career, Harold was engaged with the United States Postal Service in Springfield, where he was employed as a Tour 3 Superintendent and Postal Operations Specialist. He served as president of the Springfield Postal Employee Welfare Council, and in 1969 was appointed to a 4-year term on the Springfield Human Relations Commission. Harold served on the executive boards of the Springfield Trades and Labor Council and the Springfield Branch NAACP. Other civic activities included first vice-president of the Springfield-Sangamon County Community Action Program.
Harold was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He was an avid musician, playing the piano and clarinet, and singing in the Springfield Municipal Choir. He appreciated all genres of music, but was especially fond of classical music.
Harold is also survived by nieces and nephews: Dr. Victoria Nichols Johnson, Springfield; Carletta Meek, Mesa, AZ; Walter Meek, Sr., Chicago, IL; Helen Meek, Gilbert, AZ; Victor (Mary) Meek, Casa Grande, AZ; Charles "Chuckie" Meek of Las Vegas, NV; John (Joyce) Brooks, Florissant, MO; William (Adrienne) Meek, Philadelphia, PA; Dennis (Beverly) Meek, Durham, NC; Victoria Susan Meek, Dallas, TX; Ellen (David) Tweedy, New York, NY; Roberta Meek, Allentown, PA; Russell Meek, Sr; Rebecca Meek Horton, New York, NY; Patricia Meek; Fredericka Meek, Los Angeles, CA; and Dr. Stephen (Karen) Lockhart, Oakland, CA.
Services: Visitation Saturday Sept 9 at 1 - 2 pm, followed by Celebration of Life at 2 pm at St Luke's Episcopal Church, 1218 E South Grand Ave, Springfield, Fr. Shawn Denney, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Bisch & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
