Hazel Carolyn Ferret Foster, 87, of Oak Hill, VA, formerly of Culpeper, VA, passed away on Friday March 3, 2017.
Hazel was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on June 22, 1929, to Charles S. Ferrett and Hazel C. (Grosshans) Ferrett. She is survived by her son, Douglas W. Foster and his wife Joanne Foster of Bedford, VA; daughter, Susan Foster Rayyan and her husband Ahmed I. Rayyan of Oak Hill, VA.; daughter, Cheryl L. Foster of Oak Hill, VA.; and grandchildren, Sameer-Andrew Rayyan, Mariam-Elizabeth Rayyan, Bethany Foster and Rachael Foster. Hazel is also survived by her identical twin sister, Mary (Ferrett) Gummoe of Vernon, CT; sister, Rebecca (Ferrett) Thomas of Middlefield, Ohio; and preceded in death by her brother Charles S. Ferrett, Jr. of Kinsale, VA.
From an early age, Hazel was interested in the field of education. She graduated with a B.S. in Education from Western Connecticut State University and a Master of Education from the University of Virginia. Hazel began her career teaching in Hartford Public schools and then accompanied her husband, Wilbur (Bill) E. Foster, to live in England, Okinawa and Cyprus. She taught school in both Okinawa and Cyprus. Upon returning to America, Hazel settled in Culpeper, VA and continued her career as an elementary school and reading teacher for thirty years. Additionally, she owned and operated the Rockland Country Day School and was an adjunct professor at Germanna Community College. After retiring, Hazel took a position as a professor at Johnson University in Knoxville, TN until the age of 80. Hazel then resided in Oak Hill, VA where she continued her interest in education, travel and home renovation.
Hazel was full of life and a very caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, VA at 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2017. Interment will follow the service in the Culpeper National Cemetery (old Grounds). In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Hazel Foster Teacher Education Scholarship at Johnson University, 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37998. Make checks to Johnson University with memo to Hazel Foster Fund.
