Springfield, IL-HAZEL MARIE DOUGLAS, 88, of Springfield, passed away at 1:13 am Monday, May 8, 2017 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

She was born in Springfield, September 30, 1928 the daughter of Fredrick C. and Ruth (Curtis) Douglas. Her parents, six brothers: Fred, Lewis, Earl, Artis, Cyril, and Clifford, and two sisters, Leona Ross and Juanita Douglas, all preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sister, Thelma P. Douglas of Springfield, a sister-in-law, Kate Douglas of Detroit, MI, and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel grew up in Springfield, and also spent some time in Gary, IN. She attended Iles School and Feitshans High School. A life long member of Union Baptist Church, she was a faithful member of the Usher Board for more than twenty years.

Hazel was a hard worker. She worked as Household Technician for over 30 years.

She was proud of her heritage and especially of the direct connection to the Civil War. Her grandfather was Cupid Douglas who served in the Civil War, Company B, 17th U.S. Colored Infantry from Nov. 16, 1863 until his regiment was mustered out of service on April 25, 1866. Cupid Douglas' name appears on plaque B-34 on the National African American Civil War Soldiers Monument in Washington, D.C.

Cremation Rites will be accorded by the Bisch Crematory.

A memorial service will be held at Union Baptist Church at 11:00 am Monday, May 15, 2017 with Rev. T. Ray McJunkins officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 am Monday until the time of the service at the church.

Inurnment will be private in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
