Helen Bayley, longtime resident of Marin County, was born on January 4, 1924 and died on June 18, 2012 after a brief illness, at the age of 88. Helen was the only daughter of David R. Grafton of Pennsylvania and Helen J. Grafton of Maryland. Her beloved older brother, George (known as Buddy) died at age 8. Helen was the mother of Linda Forbes Bayley who predeceased her in 1968. She is survived by her children, Dinah, Roberta West Bayley and Warner Grafton Bayley, and her grandson Obadiah Switzer. Helen's marriage to Warner Nicol Bayley ended in divorce in the 60s, though they remained friends. Helen was an exemplary homemaker, skilled in sewing, knitting, embroidery and crochet. She served for several years as a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America, teaching countless young women (including her daughters) about the joys of self reliance and the wonders of the natural world of trees, plants, and flowers. In the 60s Helen became an avid and enthusiastic horsewoman, riding her well loved horses, Buddy and Beau through the hills of Marin. In later years she put her energies into her garden and attempted mastery of the stock market, to great success. Helen loved poetry and often read aloud from "Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám" and Carl Sandburg. She will be dearly missed by all her knew her for her warm smile. In remembrance, please see the beauty and joy in this world, as Helen surely did.
