Helen Kapitan, 90, of Stamford, Connecticut, born on February 26, 1925, to the late Joseph and Julia Hornyak, died peacefully on July 1, 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Helen worked at KT Murphy School for many years until her retirement. She will always be remembered for her amazing spirit, her love for growing and caring for her huge vegetable garden every year, and her passion for fishing, crabbing and clamming! She was a wonderful cook and always had enough to feed the neighborhood and anyone who dropped by!

Helen is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Frank Kapitan, and a sister, Elsie "Bunny" Parsons. She is also survived by her grandson, Shawn M. Kapitan, Sr., his wife Nicole, and three great grandchildren, Shawn M. Kapitan, Jr., Ryan Kapitan, and Gracie Kapitan along with four nieces and a nephew.

She was predeceased by her son Ronald F. Kapitan and daughter Joyce L. Kapitan. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Matilda Hornyak, Ethel MacLellan and Margaret "Midge" Pike, as well as two brothers, Lewis Hornyak, and Joseph Hornyak, Jr.

The family would like to thank the dedicated nurses and staff of the Regency Heights of Stamford for the loving care they provided to Helen over the years.

Family and friends are invited to join us for a service to celebrate her life on July 18, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church (the "Fish" Church), 1101 Bedford Street, Stamford, CT at 10:00 am.
