Helen Whitmore Diehl, 84, of the Weyers Cave community passed away on March 15, 2016 at Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville.


She was born on July 3, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA, the youngest daughter of the late Amos McKinley Whitmore and Minnie Mitchell Whitmore.


Helen graduated from Linville-Edom High School in 1947, where she loved Home Economics and won many ribbons for track. She attended Madison College

(now JMU) where she excelled in synchronized swimming, and Rockingham Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She had been employed at RMH at the

Supervisor's office and in the Dietary Department, and also as a nurse's aide in the office of Dr. Richard H. Smith, Jr. MD.

On April 29, 1950, she married the late David R. Chapman, Jr., of Keezletown; they were blessed with two daughters. On February 23, 1980 she married the

late Leon H. Diehl.

Helen enjoyed gardening and growing roses, canning, baking, Bingo, her many beloved cats and dogs, and most especially spending time with her family. She

was a member of Weyers Cave United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane C. Williams and husband, Len, of Harrisonburg, and Denise C. Sager and husband, Kenny, of Timberville; three

grandchildren, Jennifer L. Williams and fiancé, John Young, Christopher D. Williams and wife, Lara, Karen D. Ennis and husband, Tripp; ten great-

grandchildren, Cooper, Bryn, Colton and Jase Williams, Theodore and Coraline Ennis, Caitlin, Christopher, Eric and Parker Young; one brother, John J.

Whitmore of Jacksonville, FL; one sister, Frances Plecker of Harrisonburg; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Diane Sheets; and step-son, Don Diehl.

Survivors also include, step-daughter-in-law, Joyce Diehl; six step-grandchildren, Tonya Witherow and husband, Rick, Autumn Martin, DJ Diehl and wife,

Nicole, Wendy Sheets, Angie Unruh and husband, Brad, and David Sheets; eight step-great-grandchildren, Avery and Adrian Witherow, Mikayla Martin, Ella

Diehl, Kaitlyn and Kendra Horowitz, Bradley and Bailey Sheets.

Private burial will be Friday morning and the family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2016 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., at Weyers Cave United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 19, 2016 with Pastor Peggy Packard officiating.
