Helene Rotwein,a third generation Jacksonian, was born December 13, 1923 at her family home at 921 Morningside Street in Jackson. Her parents, Edwin and Erna Ascher were lifelong residents of the city. Her grandfather, Joseph Ascher , then later her father, Edwin, along with his brother, Simon, owned Ascher Brothers, a hardware and farm supply store located on South State Street. Helene was a member of Beth Israel Congregation of Jackson where she was a religious school teacher and a life member of Hadassah.
After leaving Chicago, she worked in Los Angeles in product and advertising design. Helene returned to Jackson and in October, 1950 married Abe A. Rotwein,a lawyer in Jackson and had a daughter, Suzanne.
Her life-long activities reflected her love of being in and working with organizations. They included memberships in Alpha Epsilon Phi, sorority, Delta Phi Delta, honorary art fraternity, charter board member of the Jackson women's chapter of Jaycees,. Helene was a local past president and state board member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) where she was awarded the distinction of AAUW Woman of Achievement in 2005. She had worked for the Mississippi State Highway Department, the City of Jackson, and the Lefleur's.Bluff Heritage Foundation.
Her hobbies included world-wide travel. Helene also participated in the Mississippi Humanities Council Speaker's Bureau, where she presented slide presentations on Old Jackson and Jackson in World War II to local church and civic groups.
Survivors include her daughter Suzanne; and nieces Lynn Goldschmidt Lecourt and Melanie Cahn Vann and their families. Helene's younger sister, Blanche Ascher Goldschmidt, predeceased her.
Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Sunday December 24, 2017at Beth Israel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Mississippi state chapter or the National Alzheimer's Association.
