Henry Numa Hymel, who proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the age of 98. Beloved husband of the late Martha "Marie" Dimmette Smith and the late Marie "Earline" Savoie by his first marriage. Son of the late Honorat Joseph Hymel, Sr. and Marguerite Becnel Hymel. Preceded in death by his siblings, Emma Margurite Andermann (Antoine), Lelia Marie Arceneaux (Robert), Marie Clemence Basset (Fernand), Honorat Joseph Hymel, Jr. (Buhler), Roland Joseph Hymel, Sr. (Mildred), Julie Hymel, Octave Pierre Hymel, Sr. (Ladye Mae), Melodia Cecile Tassin (George), Rene Etienne Hymel, Sr. (Gloria) and Elouise Hymel. Father of Christopher H. Hymel (Rami), Timothy P. Hymel (Desiree) and Rebecca A. Desporte (Charles). Stepfather of Anne M. Smith, Thomas E. Smith, Christine S. Trevett (Toby), and the late James F. Smith. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hymel was born on a plantation in St. James, Louisiana, in 1915, and moved to New Orleans in 1923. He served in the Army Air Corp in North Africa during WWII. Mr. Hymel retired from selling insurance in 2001 at the age of 85. He was an usher for many years at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Mr. Hymel was past president of AARP Chapter 4417, member of American Legion Post 350, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3267, Good Ole Metairie Boys, New Orleans Elks Lodge #30, the Republican Party of Louisiana, Charter Member of the National WWII Museum, Hillsdale College Benefactor, Lifetime Member of the East Jefferson Auxiliary, and numerous social and carnival organizations including Nu Kappa Rho, Nu Kappa Psi, Le Bijoux, Heralds, Dragons and TOGOMS. He was also on several bowling leagues throughout his life. When health factors prevented him from bowling, he found a passion for Nintendo Wii bowling. He will always be remembered by his twinkling blue eyes, his favorite hat and his love for whistling. The family would like to thank Henry's caregivers, Jackie Smith and Trina Edwards, for their wonderful care and attention.
The visitations and Mass will be celebrated jointly for both Henry and Marie Hymel. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Hwy. in Metairie, LA on Monday, May 12, 2014 from 5PM until 8:30PM and will resume on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 9AM until 11AM, followed by a Funeral Mass. Interment with military honors to follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
