He attended the University of Houston and the University of Texas School of Dentistry. He married Jayne Catherine Howard on May 6, 1944 in Houston, and raised four children. After graduating from dental school, he served three years as a Navy dentist in San Diego. He tried a civilian private dental practice for two years in Houston, but then rejoined the military and began a long career in the Air Force Dental Corps, where he was able to explore and develop his interest in oral surgery, eventually becoming Base Dental Surgeon at his last four duty stations. He was stationed at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, and at Tachikawa AFB, Yokota AFB, and Johnson AFB in Japan in the 1950's.
