Herbert Klepper passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, October 19, 2017. Herb was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 31, 1928 to Louis and Anna Klepper, the youngest of three boys.
Herb was a graduate of PS 99 in Brooklyn, New York, a detail he shares with the famous Woody Allen. In 1946, he graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn, New York as class salutatorian. After earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in 1950, he entered the US Armed Forces and served in the technical services unit at Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until 1954. In 1960, he was honorably discharged from the army. Herb earned a MS in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1958 and embarked on his 30-year career as an engineer. He worked at Mergenthaler Linotype in Brooklyn, New York, where he designed typeset machines used for printing presses and graphic arts. After retiring as chief engineer in 1983, he co-founded Ultre Corporation and designed the widely successful Ultresetter, a laser recorder used in the newspaper industry and desktop publishing. He retired from Ultre in 1988. Over his lifetime as an engineer, Herb garnered some fourteen patents.

On March 27, 1982, Herb married the love of his life, Daphne Wong. He and his wife indulged their passion for travel and toured the United States, Europe, Canada, Asia, and the Caribbean. In 2002, he moved from Long Island, New York to Tallahassee, Florida to live near one of Daphne's daughters.

Herb was a lifetime member of Sigma XI. He loved photography and was an avid reader on a wide variety of subjects - literature, history, biography, science, and mathematics.

Herb was the patriarch of a multicultural family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Daphne Klepper, brothers and spouses, Vincent Klepper (Gloria), Stewart Klepper (Carol), and nephew, Stephen Klepper.

He is survived by nephews and spouses: Jim Klepper (Mitra), Bruce Klepper (Heidi Schnicker), Jeffrey Klepper (Beth), and Florence Rouzier; stepchildren: Leonie Clarke-McLeod (Jeff), Claudette Reynolds (Larry), Althea Valle (Kurt), Judith Brown (Michael), and Robert Clarke (Sharnette), grand nephews, grand nieces, grand and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home (700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312). The family encourages memorial donations to these organizations that Herb supported: Rensselaer Polytechnic, and Compassion and Choices.
