Homer Henry Pettit passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 following several years of declining health. He was 89.

Born October 28, 1928 in Pine Grove, Virginia, Homer was the son of the late George Nixon and Julia Esther Gray Pettit. He served in the United States Navy following World War II and during the Korean War. In 1950 he married Judith Lena Robinson of Stanley, Virginia. They made their home in Lyndhurst, Virginia and raised three children.

Homer was a loving father and devoted family man who instilled a love of learning, love of family, pride in achievement, and independence in his children. He took great joy in his grandchildren and loved spending time with his brothers and sisters. He was a loyal employee of the DuPont Company in Waynesboro for 40 years, and a loyal patriot.

Homer was preceded in death by Judith, his wife of 65 years, his parents, five sisters and four brothers.

He is survived by his brother John Pettit of Luray; two sisters, Esther Prince of Stanley, and Janet Zatt of Cleveland, OH; three children, Judith Pettit Daughtry and husband Robert of Richmond, David Pettit and wife Carolyn of Charlottesville, and Sandra Pettit Husted and husband James of DeFuniak Springs, FL; grandchildren, Susan Daughtry, Katie Jones, Allan Pettit, Drew Pettit, Brooke Pettit Larry and Daniel Veit; five great grandchildren with a sixth due in February; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We will miss Homer's teasing sense of humor and wise counsel, but we celebrate his life with thanks for the love and devotion he shared for many years.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the caring staff of Our Lady of Peace, the excellent doctors, nurses and staff of the University of Virginia Nerancy Neuro Intensive Care Unit, Hospice of the Piedmont, and two devoted caregivers, Regina Havyarimana and Luwanna Scott for their compassionate care during Homer's final days.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. A private family interment will take place at Augusta Memorial Park in Fishersville, VA.
