Hortense F. Cortez, age 96, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great, great-grandmother.
Hortense was born February 18, 1921 in Houston, TX to the late Elias and Julia Franco. She was raised in Bonita Gardens in Houston, Texas. She married Thomas Cortez Jr. on November 26, 1944 in Houston, TX and began a family. Together, they had seven children, four girls and three boys. While raising her children, Hortense worked in various capacities, but her favorite job was as a Social Worker where she helped disadvantaged children and adults. This included teaching Citizenship classes, English classes, and meal preparation classes. She always enjoyed helping others to become self-sufficient and took pride when her students became legal citizens of the United States. Hortense also enjoyed cooking, baking and making beautiful crafts. Her hobbies included collecting Betty Boop and Barbie memorabilia, salt and pepper shakers, and elephants! Yes, tons of memorabilia over her 96 years that she was with us. In her later years, she kept her mind sharp by working on jigsaw and word search puzzles, her favorite pastime. She was always a strong-willed, feisty, and a very friendly individual who loved to talk and visit with any person she came across. She would make friends very easily with total strangers and helped everyone in any way that she could.
Hortense is preceded in death by her parents, Elias and Julia Franco, all of her beloved siblings, her husband, Thomas Cortez Jr., her oldest son, David T. Cortez, and her son-in-law, Daniel Sepulveda. She is survived in death by her daughters, Sylvia T. Sepulveda, Alma D. Luera, Hortense (Nancy) A. Ramirez and husband George, Alice R. Olivas, two sons, Louis A. Cortez and wife Mary, and Roland G. Cortez Sr. and wife Anna, and one daughter-in-law, Felicidad C. Cortez. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a special god daughter. It always brought her great joy to visit and laugh with them. Hortense is also survived by numerous extended family members, including two sister-in-laws, Teresa Franco and Isabel Garcia, various cousins, and nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
