Howard Aubrey Hawkins, Sr., of Aroda, VA, passed away at his home Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the age of 91. He was born November 29, 1925, in Washington, D.C. to Aubrey Mathias Hawkins and Mattie Hudson Hawkins. He was raised on a farm in Fairfax County, VA, and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1943.

His country called in December 1944 for his tour of duty in the U.S. Navy where he served honorably until after WW II had ended. He came home to his widowed mother and the family farm and began his lifelong career as a farmer. He met and then married the love of his life, Shirley Lee Hawkins on February 4, 1951, in front of their families and close friends. Soon thereafter, they moved to the farm in Prince William County where they lived and raised four children for the next 54 years. After careful thought and consideration, they agreed to sell that farm, purchase a new farm in Madison County, VA, and live out the rest of their lives surrounded by their family in the little log cabin that his bride had always wanted. That dream was realized on the day he let go of his earthly life to join his Shirley in eternity forever.

He is survived by his children, Howard Aubrey Hawkins Jr., Carol Hawkins White, Clifford Wayne Hawkins and his wife, Janet, and Mary Jane Hawkins; grandchildren, Justin Hawkins, Jon Hawkins, Samantha Gulley, Timothy White, Danielle Hawkins, Jennifer McGuire, Nicholas Kiernan and Janelle Miller; great-grandchildren, Ava Hawkins, Mason Hawkins, Shelby Gulley, Wyatt Gulley, Owen Gulley, Emory Kiernan and Leia Kiernan and Dylan McGuire.
