Howard Melvin Gaede, age 93, of Argenta, IL, passed from this life on August 31, 2014 at the Heartland Healthcare Center in Decatur, IL.

Howard was born on April 11, 1921 in West Salem, IL to Albert and Sadie (Gardner) Gaede. He married Juanita June Giese on March 1, 1946 and she preceded him in death on August 1, 2004. Howard enlisted in the army and proudly served his country. He was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands and trained for eleven months there with an aircraft warning unit. Later he was sent to Siapan and served there for several months. Howard also spent time on Okinawa and following his enlistment, was awarded two bronze stars.

Howard worked for several years as a machinist at Caterpillar in Decatur, IL. He was a member of the Albion V.F.W. and will be honored by his comrades in a military salute at his graveside service.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Howard is survived by his son, Rick (and wife Rebecca) Gaede of Oreana, IL, grandchildren: Christopher (and wife Stephanie) Gaede of Decatur, IL, Tisha (and husband Jaime) Zavala of LeClaire, IA and one great-grandchild, Cecilia Zavala.

Per his wishes, the body has been cremated and there will be an inurnment of cremains at a Graveside Service at 1PM, on Saturday, September6, 2014 at the Moravian Cemetery in West Salem, IL. To honor his memory, there will be a military salute at the graveside, as well.

Memorial donations are encouraged to go to the V.F.W. Avenue of Flags on the Albion Square with envelopes available at the graveside service.
