Howard R. Baird, 79, of North Granby, beloved husband of Beverly (Roberts) Baird for 56 years, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was raised there and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He graduated from the RCA Institute in NYC and trained in Holland for his work as a field service engineer for the Phillips Medical Systems. He worked on cardio pulmonary labs and special procedures during his career that spanned over 40 years before retirement. He lived in Simsbury for over 25 years moving to Granby 24 years ago. Howard was a member of Shannon-Shattuck Post # 182 AL, Granby and had been a Ham radio operator under the call sign KB1 NMS. He volunteered for the ARES group working on several Jim Calhoun Benefit Races. He was also a member of the Huge Apple Group. He loved computers and was blessed with the innate skill to be able to fix anything mechanical. He enjoyed travel, classical music, reading, hiking and fishing. He leaves a daughter Susan Baird-Dore and her husband Christopher Dore, Sr. of Westfield, MA; a brother William T. Baird, Jr. and his wife Louise of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren Michelle Blair of Windsor Locks and Melissa Blair Richardson and her husband Kevin of Springfield, MA; three great grandchildren Cade Kiely, Kyler and Kaylie Richardson; a nephew William Baird, III; and a good friend Tom Allen of Windsor Locks. He was predeceased by his son Robert Baird. His family would like to thank the compassionate staff of John Dempsey Hospital's hospice team for their exceptional care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February, 29, 2016, 11 am directly at St. Therese Church, 120 West Granby Road (RT 20), Granby. Military honors will follow at the church with a reception in the church Parrish Center. Burial will be at the family's convenience. Contributions may be made to St. Therese Church, Granby or the Alzheimer's Association, Ct Chapter, 200 Executive Blvd., Ste 4B, Southington, CT 06489-1058. The Hayes Huling & Carmon Funeral Home of Granby is caring for the arrangements.
