WILLIAMSBURG - Hyon Jun Kim, "Mr. Papa Kim," of Williamsburg, departed this earthly life Monday, March 19, 2012.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Chu Kim. He also leaves behind four children and their spouses, Kim Maloney and Peter Kao, Shin Murphy and her husband Timothy, Bobby Kim and his wife Naomi, all of Williamsburg; and Grace Ahn and husband Eric, of Fairfax. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Ronald Kleveland and his wife Denise, Jeanie Murphy, Michelle Murphy, Jacob Kim and Sarah Kim. He also leaves behind his great-granddaughters, Shelby and Saleen Kleveland; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kim was born on March 17, 1919, in present day North Korea. He valiantly and honorably served in the South Korean Army during the Korean War. Mr. Kim served as a Special Task Coordinate between the Korean Army and U.S. Forces.

Following his 1982 retirement from a position with the Korean Government, he moved his family to Hawaii. He then briefly resided in Texas before becoming a permanent resident of Williamsburg.

While in Williamsburg, Mr. Kim was a longtime, much-loved employee of the Williamsburg Pottery Factory. He also twice served as the Chairman of the Peninsula Korean-American Seniors Association of Newport News. Mr. Kim was an adamant anti-communist and believed in being an active citizen of the United States.

The viewing will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Thursday, March 22, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral, also held at Nelsen Funeral Home, will be on Friday, March 23, at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Williamsburg Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mr. Kim's name to the James City County Fire Department or the James City County/Bruton Volunteer Fire Department. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
