Ian "John'' Cameron Forbes, of Richmond passed away Saturday evening, September 30, 2017 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He had been valiantly fighting a rare form of leukemia for seven years, but succumbed instead to complications from pneumonia.
John was born on January 18, 1945, in Winchester, Massachusetts to Lloyd Williamson Forbes Jr. and Elta Lorraine Clinite Forbes and was the eldest son of four brothers.
John grew up in New Jersey, Indiana and Virginia, before attending high school in Mill Valley, California. He graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1963, where he participated in Track and Field and played 3rd base and shortstop in baseball. He also earned his Eagle Scout badge during this time. At Oregon State University in Corvallis, John studied forestry and geology and was a member and officer of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.
In the summer of 1967, he graduated from OSU and married Kay Louise Snyder in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 10th, before settling in a long and highly productive career in petroleum exploration with Union Oil Company of California (Unocal 76). This career took the family from the piney woods of Mississippi to the bayous and gulf area of Louisiana, finally to the corporate high rises of the Houston area.
John's interests beyond geology included astronomy, paleontology, photography, civil war history, reading, meteorology and numismatics. He was a generous supporter of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church later in life, and he and his wife recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary with family. John is survived by his wife Kay, sons Robert Glenn of Mesa, AZ, Matthew Scott of Krum, TX; grandchildren Ian Michael, Isaiah Saunders, Lenna Elizabeth, Christopher John, Douglas Alan and Jacob Walter; two brothers, Robert Jay of Deming, NM and Douglas Donaldson of Albuquerque, NM. The family would like to express their gratitude to the kind and loving staff that cared for John at M.D. Anderson Cancer Centers in Sugar Land and Houston.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek from 4:00-6:00P.M. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:00A.M. in the Chapel at Sugar Creek Baptist Church located at 13213 Sw Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas 77478.
