Old Lyme- Irene Dalton Hickey-Wheeler passed in peace on June 5, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 6, 1928 to William and Florence Dalton in East Hartford, CT where she was raised, and raised her own family as well. During her school years, Irene was always at the top of her class, and was once recognized with the D.A.R. award for her excellence and patriotism. After graduation, Irene married Richard Hickey and together they raised four children. She provided a loving home and many times worked two jobs (waitressing, bookkeeping, i.e.) to provide for her family. Through their dedication and hard work, Dick and Irene were able to purchase "the cottage" at White Sand Beach in Old Lyme, Ct. Many wonderful memories with family and friends took place there, and Irene spent her retirement years there. Dick passed in 1984 and in 1990 Irene fell in love and married Norman Wheeler, with their families present in celebration with them. The two of them became "snowbirds" and made their winter home in Melbourne Beach, Florida where they were a very active part of the A1A community, and made many wonderful friends there.
There was never a challenge or task too great for Irene to tackle (she studded the attic), and if you needed someone to organize an event or to just lend a hand, she was your wisest choice, as all those who were touched by her can attest. Some of Irene's interests included bowling (where she met Norm), history, decorating for holidays, reading, sewing, cooking, playing cards and volunteer work. Spending time with and giving to her family brought her the greatest joy.
Irene was predeceased by her daughter Mary Beth Hickey Grivois, a loss no parent should ever endure. Irene is survived by her husband Norm and will be missed dearly by her 3 sons and their spouses. Daniel and Leisa Hickey of Tolland, Dennis Hickey of Manchester and Val and Jami (Tyska) Hickey of Eastford. She was cherished by her seven grandchildren, Bridget Rothe, Christopher, Matt, Justin, Joshua and Shane Hickey, and Jason Grivois; and adored by her eight great-grandchildren, Charlie, Katie, and Jackson Hickey, Casey and Madysen Rothe, and Kaleigh, Alyssa and Isabelle Grivois, and further survived by many other relatives and friends.
The family would like to graciously thank the wonderful, loving and caring staff in the Critical Care unit at Manchester Memorial Hospital, you guys were awesome and kept us going during the last week of Mom's life. We will be eternally grateful.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2016 in Christ the King Church, Old Lyme. Visitation will be held at 9:30am prior to the service in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Ln., Old Lyme, Ct. Donations may be made to the Hole in the Wall Gang, Ashford, Ct or Christ the King Church in Old Lyme, where Irene was an active member. As a testament to Irene's thoughtfulness, she and Norm made and prepaid all the arrangements for her burial so her family would not be burdened. Irene will always be forever remembered for being loving and generous and missed by all those who knew her. Please visit for photos, tributes, directions and more service information.
