Irene Ramos, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 11. She was born January 23, 1924 in Corpus Christi, TX to Salome and Elijia Reyes.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Miguel Lucio Ramos, a sister, Elidia Luna, and brother, Ignacio Reyes.

She is survived by four children, Imelda Ramos Shane (Tom), Melvin C. Ramos (Peggy), Mike Ray Ramos (Estela) and Ileana Ramos Boren(James); ten grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

Mrs. Ramos was a Taft High School graduate and attended Del Mar College and TX A & I University-Kingsville.

Work experience started early during her life as she was the breadwinner for her mother and two siblings. She began her career as a salesperson and buyer for a retail department store, married in 1946 and shortly after began a family; however, she never stopped working and improving her skills. Not satisfied with her current situation, she attended beauty school and received a hairdresser’s license and worked for a local beauty salon in downtown Taft. Shortly thereafter, seeking better pay and job opportunities, she worked for Taft I.S.D. as a teacher’s aide

For 34 years with Special education students. This was her day job but once the sun set, she went on to the Taco Hut where she and her husband, Miguel, successfully operated the Mexican food restaurant for 15 years. Together they made this a two business owner enterprise! Miguel had the dream and she became the wind under his wings.

Busy lady was her middle name because she also served in community activities most of her adult life. In high school, she was a member of a women’s softball team, a Brownie leader, CCD (catechism) teacher at Immaculate Conception Church, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer at the Aransas Hospital as a Pink Lady.
