J.L. was born on March 2, 1941 in Wellington, Texas to James B. and Nettie Ruth Cook. J.L. grew up in Snyder and Andrews, Texas. He graduated from Andrews High School in 1959. He participated in track, baseball and football during his high school years. Following graduation, James moved to Amarillo and graduated from West Texas Barber College. He worked at Amarillo Air Base for many years and was a member of the Church of Nazarene. He retired from Greyhound Bus Lines after twenty five years of service. The family would like to thank his caregivers John Eric Gonzales and Tammie Nolte.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, John H. Ray III; and a fur baby.

He is survived by his sister, Carol Ray and husband John of Amarillo; an Uncle Dr. Lonnie W. Fuson and wife Carol of Lawton, OK; several cousins and a host of friends. He enjoyed years of friendship with his close friend, Calvin Honea.

The family suggest memorials be made to First Nazarene Church, 5201 S. Soncy, Amarillo, TX 79119 or to a charity of choice.
