Jack Dempsey Hughes, 92, of Marietta passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at his home. He was a member of the Marietta Church of Christ, the Marietta Lions Club, a farmer and retired maintenance worker for the Town of Marietta. Jack was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII. He was a Gunners Mate on a Destroyer in the South Pacific. He took part in the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943 and the Battle of Peleliu in September of 1944. Later he served as a Navy SEA-BEE (Construction Battalion) in the Philippines building airport runways. He enjoyed mowing, sports and watching the Chicago Cubs.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Friday, September 1, 2017 at McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Calvin Barber and Minister Ronnie Livingston officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Rest Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, September 1 2017 from 11AM-1PM at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife Ethel Harris Hughes; two daughters, Jackie Moore and her husband Randy of Booneville and Donna Hughes of Marietta; two grandchildren, Lauren Moore and John Andrew Moore both of Booneville; a special niece and helper Debbie Harris of New Site and one sister-in-law, Maggie Sue Hughes of Baldwyn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Elma Pounds Hughes; two brothers, Gene Tunney and his wife Emmajean Hughes and Max Schmeling Hughes; two sisters, Beatrice Yarber and her husband Carl and Maurine Young.
Pallbearers will be Dallas Yearber, Bill Williams, J.W. Harris, Ronald Burns, Randy Allen and Robert Young.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Roy Green and Clay Green.
