Dr. James A. Dickerson, 80, of Martinsville passed away on October 30, 2017, surrounded by his family in love and peace. He was born February 25, 1937, in Cincinnati, OH, to the late Harry S. Dickerson and Carrie Mae Dickerson. In addition, he was preceded in death by his sister Gyelda Ruth Gill.

Jim graduated from Johnson Bible College in 1959, and was ordained to the Christian Ministry that same year. He received his Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in 1962, and Doctor of Ministry from Lexington Theological Seminary in 1987.
HIs ministry led him to serve churches in Indiana, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia, where he served Broad Street Christian Church for 27 years. Upon retirement he continued to serve as an interim minister in several churches in North Carolina and Virginia.
Dr. Dickerson served in many positions at the national and regional levels of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). His national service included: the General Board of the Capital Christian Church, the Board of Directors of the Church Finance Council and chair of that Board, and Advisory Committee on Ministry and Worship. His regional service included: Regional Board of the Christian Church in Virginia, Moderator of the Christian Church in Virginia, and chair of the Administrative-Finance Committee.
His service also reached beyond the Christian Church Disciples of Christ. He was a member of the Advisory Committee on Stewardship of the National Council of Churches on three occasions.
Additionally, he was an active citizen in the Martinsville community. Jim served on the Board of Trustees of Martinsville and Henry County, the United Way, and the Good News Jail Ministry. He was on the Founding Committee and served on the Board of Safety Net. In addition, he had a long association with the Martinsville Police Department where he was a volunteer counselor and chaplain. He was on the Founding Committee as chairman of the Hospice Committee of Memorial Hospital, and he designed and implemented a bereavement care program for Hospice.
He is survived by his wife, of 56 years Wanda (Babe) Dickerson; his daughter, Tammy Jones and husband Frank of Starkville, MS, and grandsons Frankie and Matt; daughter Lee Ann McGhee and husband Mike of Richmond VA, and grandsons Reid and Will and granddaughter Malone.
The two most important things in Jim's life were his family and his ministry.. He was fondly referred to as Dr. Dickerson, Jimmy, Jim, Dad, and Pop Pop. He was proud to be each of these things. He loved hunting, collecting coins, perfecting his yard, sports, woodworking, and most of all spending time with family. His love for the Lord was the foundation in all that he did and he felt complete with Babe by his side as a team in ministry.
