James Burt (Jim) Mullins Jr., 93, died Friday January 12th, 2018 at his home in Abilene, Texas. Graveside services will be held Friday January 19th at 1 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.
He was born on November 20th, 1924 in Wellington, Texas to his parents James Burt Mullins Sr. and Virginia Mae Mullins.
Jim entered the United States Air Force on July 29th, 1947 and retired October 31st, 1965 at Dyess AFB. While at Dyess, he served as a B-52 crew member with the 337th Bombardment Squadron. During his service with the USAF, he was declared M.I.A. in 1945 after his plane was shot down over Germany in the area now known as Bosnia. With the help of the German underground, he turned 21 walking to freedom over the French Alps. He was held as a prisoner of war in Korea from June 1st, 1951 until September 28th, 1953.
He is survived by his wife Gerrilee Mullins of Abilene and 5 children, Rick Mullins of Abilene, Jan Mullins of San Angelo, Traci McLeod of Austin, Scott Mullins of Weatherford, Texas, and Justin Mullins of Abilene; by 2 sisters Kathryn Mullins of Manor, Texas and Martha Nelson of California and 1 brother Joe Mullins of Alvin, Texas; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by death by his parents James and Virginia Mullins, his sisters Lela, Lucile, Mary and Ruth and his brother Clarence.
