Memorial services for James "Coach" Cornish, 85, of Lufkin, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor B. J. Douglas officiating.
Mr. Cornish was born August 31, 1930 in Kilgore, TX and passed away Saturday, June 25, 2016 in a local hospital. He was the son of the late Elvie (Henderson) and Johnny Cornish.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and "Unc". He was a family man and a strong community worker in Lufkin, Kilgore, Longview and the surrounding East Texas area. He coached women and co-ed softball, men's basketball, and umpired for the Parks and Recreation Center for many years. He served in his community and was a member of New Hope Community Baptist Church. He worked at Sun-N-Pines Motel years ago and his remaining years at Holiday Inn as a maintenance supervisor until retirement.
Survivors include wife of 47 years, Annie Cornish of Lufkin; son, Dwight Cornish of Ft. Worth; son Mark Cornish and wife, Sofia; daughters, Marcia Menefield; Deidre Douglas and husband, BJ; Chequita Cornish; and Ida Cornish; son, David Cornish; daughter, Rachel Sampson and husband, Frederic, all of Houston; sisters-in-law, Delma J. Brown and Gwendlyn Moses, both of Diboll and Linda Fontenot, of Baytown; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
The family will welcome friends and family from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, at Gipson Funeral Home.
Services have been placed in the care of Gipson Funeral Home.
