They traveled a lot visiting their family especially their daughters and grandsons. His daughters gave him a computer when he was 80, and it changed his life. After he taught himself how to use it, he enjoyed emailing family and friends and reading on the internet. Once he discovered eBay he spent time bidding on fun items that he gave to family and friends. He was a member of Foote Street Church of Christ.

Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Charles Ray Harwell and one sister Carolyn Harwell Brooks.
