James "Jim" Douglas Smith was born on August 24, 1929 in Fort Collins, Colorado to James F. Smith and Margaret Ruth Watson Smith. He was the eldest of three boys and was very close to his brothers, Robert and John Smith. The Smith family lived all over the country due to his father's occupation and his mother's poor health.

Jim graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln Heights, California in 1949 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the Air Force Reserves. He was activated into the Air Force in 1950 and served as a member of the air police and honor guard. Upon completion of his service in the U.S. Air Force, he went to work as a building contractor, learning his trade from his father.

Jim met Nora Alessi in high school and in 1952 they were married. They moved into their first home in Baldwin Park, California where their two children were born. His first child Denise was born in 1955, followed by his son James "Jim" in 1958. In 1960, Jim, Nora and their family moved to West Covina where they raised their family. They later moved to La Verne, California in 1990.

Always ready for the next adventure, Jim was an outdoorsman who enjoyed being active. He had many hobbies and interests which included: boating, fishing, motorcycle riding, golf and skiing.

On July 24, 2014, Jim passed away at his home due to natural causes. He is survived by his loving wife Nora, daughter Denise (Mike) Eckenrode, and son Jim (Janis) Smith, grandchildren Nicki Eckenrode, Jason (Jenae) Eckenrode, Jeni (Vance) Lynch, Corey Smith, and Kelsey Smith. He also had one great granddaughter Evelynn Eckenrode who was the "Sunshine" of his life. He is also survived by his youngest brother, John Smith of Colorado.

Jim will be especially remembered for his quick wit and spirit of adventure. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Enjoy your best adventure yet "Big Jim"!
