James Earl Bigler, 88, departed this life on January 5, 2017. Jim was born on October 14, 1928, in Massillon, Ohio to the late Edward and Minnie Bigler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Allen Bigler and his siblings, Robert, Harold and Joyce.

He is survived by his wife Judy, daughter Jennifer Hanson (Bill), and son Jonathan Bigler (Robyn).

After graduating from high school he joined the Navy in order to obtain his college degree. He attended Ohio State for 2 years and was then stationed in Pensacola, Florida, where he met his wife of 66 years, Judith Emma Moore. While in Pensacola he trained to become a Naval Aviator, which ignited a passion he carried through his life. After his time in the navy he and Judy moved to back Columbus, Ohio, so that Jim could complete his under graduate and master's degrees.

He spent his entire career at DuPont as a mechanical engineer, living in Wilmington, DE, Old Hickory, TN, Kinston, NC, and finally settling in Martinsville, VA. Upon retiring from DuPont after more than 30 years' service he pursued 2 of his favorite hobbies, flying and golf. His enthusiasm for flying was so great that he built his own airplane, an RV-6A, which was his pride and joy.

When he was not tinkering with his plane he was spending his time at his beloved Chatmoss County Club, both on the course and in the clubhouse, and all the people there were like a second family to him.

The family will receive friends from 4:00pm - 6:00pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Collins-Mckee-Stone Funeral Home, 109 Broad Street, Martinsville, VA.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the National Museum of Naval Aviation, 1750 Radford Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32508.
