James Edward "Poppie" Derington, 84, of Montgomery, Texas, passed away into the loving presence of Our Lord on October 22, 2017. During his battle with cancer, he continued to face each day with a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step.
He was born on September 30, 1933, in Gleason, Tennessee to Luther Eddy Derington and Opal Lorene Overton Derington. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Lehigh University, Poppie moved to west Texas to begin a career in the oil and gas industry. He met and married his wife, Yvonna Wagner in 1960. This was the beginning of his greatest love, his family. As a geophysicist, his work took him to locations worldwide. The family lived in Bogota, Colombia and Jakarta, Indonesia. In those 13 years overseas, Poppie developed a second love, the game of golf and was fortunate to play at exotic and historical locations.
Upon his retirement in 1990, he settled down on the beautiful golf courses of Bentwater on Lake Conroe. Following the death of his wife, Yvonna, he took on the care of a very demanding female, his cat, Burke Hare. He devoted 14 years to the care of "his girl" and the birds and squirrels that spent the days with him on his back porch.
James joined St. James the Apostle Episcopal Church and began pursuing a third passion, music. His choir family embraced him tightly and provided love, laughter, and fellowship. He traveled with the choir and was fortunate to sing in the great cathedrals of Europe, including Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, Gloucester Cathedral, St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna, and the Salzburg Cathedral.
Poppie inspired many lives and leaves us with cherished memories. We love him, admire him, and know he is singing with the angels in heaven.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonna Wagner Derington, parents Luther and Opal Derington, daughter Martha Jean Cooper; brother in-law Bud Wagner and wife Ann of Roswell, NM, sister-in-law Frances Milstead and husband Bill of Roswell, NM, and brother-in-law John Seiver of Hereford, TX.
James is survived by daughters, Alison Reilly and husband Dave of Annandale, VA, Abby Christine Stanley and husband Baxter of La Porte, TX; sister June Staats and husband Lloyd of Belle Mead, NJ, brother William V. Derington of La Porte, TX; sister-in-law Theda Seiver of Hereford, TX, sister-in-law Sarrah Sides and husband Jake of Evans, CO; grandchildren James Wesley Derington, Aaron Seth Denham, Megan Michelle Reilly, Benjamin Earl Cooper, Patrick James Reilly, and Nicholas Alexander Murphy and many incredible great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
