Obituary

James G. Hurbanek, 79, of Avon Lake, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021 following a valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease. Jim was born June 14, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Louis and Rose (nee Schury) Hurbanek. His love of sports started on the ball fields of Dormont, PA, where he graduated high school in 1959. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh. While at Pitt, he earned a Varsity Letter as a four-year football manager.
After graduation, he joined the management team of United States Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh, starting a 35 year career that would ultimately lead he and his family to Avon Lake, OH in 1982.
Upon retirement in 1998, he took up basketball coaching with the Avon Lake City Schools while volunteering during the Bridgestone Invitational for 15 years. As a hole marshall he took pride reminding spectators to "stand please, quiet please."
Jim's passions were sports, travel and fishing. As a lifelong Steeler fan, he traveled to 47 of the 50 United States with his family and fellow explorers, the Burgmans. Known as "The Rock" for his steadiness and time behind the steering wheel, he was always quick witted with a great sense of humor. He took great pleasure fishing Lake Erie on his boat the "Jim Dandy."
Jim leaves behind to cherish his memory his caring wife Susan (nee Wachtler) of 49 years; son Jason (Jennifer nee Trefilek); three grandchildren, Hadley, Hunter and Hayden; sister Marilyn Albitz; brother Al Hurbanek; along with a large extended family of nieces and nephews; and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his loving daughter Shana; parents Louis and Rose Hurbanek; brother Louis and sister Frances.
In Jim's memory, the family suggests memorial contributions to Alzheimer's Association, Cleveland Area Chapter, 23215 Commerce Park, Ste 300, Beachwood, OH 44122; or Make A Wish Foundation, 6060 Rockside Woods Blvd N, #315, Independence, OH 44131; or Avon Lake City School Foundation, PO Box 231, Avon Lake, OH 44012.
