James Gentile, 93, of Naperville, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, entered eternal life on October 4, 2017. A member of the Greatest Generation, Jim served his nation in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a member of the 2nd Marine Division. He seldom discussed the campaigns he fought in, which included Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. He also was a member of the occupation force assigned to Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945. Jim served the city of Chicago as a firefighter for 27 years from 1953 until his retirement in 1980, and then worked as a fire inspector at Chicago's McCormick Place for 10 years until 1990.
Jim was born in Chicago on June 20, 1924. He was the second of four children born to Louis and Anna (nee Algozino) Gentile. After the war, Jim met the love of his life, Celine Carpenter, on a blind date, and they were married in 1947. Together, they raised four children - Eileen, James, Patricia and Thomas. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Celine; daughters Eileen (Charles) Hlubocky and Patricia Gentile; grandsons Brian (Elizabeth) Hlubocky, James (Jennifer) Hlubocky; and Matthew Gentile; and great grandchildren Thomas Gentile, Zachary and Megan Hlubocky, and Adeline Hlubocky; his sisters Mary Gentile and Rita Bartolomeo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother Frank Gentile, sons James and Thomas, and grandson John.
Visitation Monday, October 9, 2017, 10:00 AM, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Rd, Naperville, IL 60563, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at the Church.
