A celebration honoring the life of James " Harold" Pratt will be held Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home in Meridian MS. Visitation with the family will be held earlier at 2 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Gum Log Cemetery in Bailey, MS.
Harold was born July 22, 1920 in Bailey, MS and lived there until he joined the Army in September 1942, and was honorably discharged on November 28, 1945. On January 1, 1948, he married Euna Pace, and they were married until the time of her death in 2006. After his military service, he was employed by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Services. He managed fish hatcheries in Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas. During his 35 years managing fish hatcheries, he developed innovations in raising and delivering fish that are still in place today. He retired in 1975 from the hatchery in Ft Worth, and continued to live there until 1994. He and Euna moved back to Meridian in 1994. His last few years in Meridian were living at Aldersgate Retirement Community. In November, 2016, he moved to Austin, TX to be near his TX family. He died on April 25, 2017 in Austin, TX .
Harold was extremely proud of his military service. He loved to talk to veterans, especially ones that had served in WWII. He was a charter member of The National WWII Museum in New Orleans. On October 1, 2013, he was flown on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor Flight to visit the WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War and Lincoln Memorials. They also visited the Iwo Jima Monument and Arlington national Cemetery where they viewed the wreath laying and changing of the guard. He served in North Africa and throughout Italy. He was on two ships that were bombed, and one was sunk. He was not injured on either ship.
Harold was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church. He especially loved his "lunch bunch" meetings every Friday.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife Euna, his grandson Michael, his sister Mattie Grimes and his parents Clarence and Nora Pratt.
Survivors include two sons, David Pratt and his wife Kathy of Austin, TX, and John Pratt and his wife Jaleen of Everson, WA; grandchildren Marla McKay, Jillian Lowery and husband Darren, Jennifer Rodriguez and husband Carlos, Stephen Pratt, Phillip Pratt and wife Maegan. Great Grandchildren include Owen Lowery, Gracee and Jaxon Rodriguez, and Marquel McKay.
Pallbearers will be David Pratt, John Pratt, Don Pratt, Brandon Pratt, Stephen Pratt, Eddie Permenter and Wil Permenter.
The family requests memorials be made to the Central United Methodist Church, Senior Adult Ministries, in Meridian, MS
