Mr. James "Homie" Smith, age 81, of Ridgeway, passed away December 31, 2016, at his residence with his family surrounding him.

He was born February 12, 1935 in Stokes County, N. C. to the late Clayton and Emma Gray Smith. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Hawks and two brothers, Herman Smith and Wade Smith. He served his country in the U. S. Navy. He was a woodworker all his life. He owned and operated Smith Veneer Company for several years. Then he began Smith Banding Company. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were long time members of Matthew Chapel in Stoneville, N. C.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mildred Pickurel Smith; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Jimmy Hughes of Ridgeway; one sister, Sue Moore of Stoneville, N.C.; three brothers, Bobby Smith of Stoneville, N. C., Dean Smith of Ridgeway and Cleo Smith of Lubbock, TX.; two grandsons and their spouses, Adam and Amber Hughes and Zachary and Christy Hawks and five great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends Monday, January 2, 2016 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 109 Broad St., Martinsville. Funeral Services will be Tuesday 11 am at the funeral home with Grandson Adam Hughes and Wayne Johnson, officiating. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Ridgeway.
