James Luther Abernethy, 47, of Stanley died un-expectantly on Wednesday February 22, 2017. James loved his family more than anything. James was an officer with the Stanley Police Department. He loved being a school resource officer. He will be dearly missed by the students at Springfield and Kiser Elementary Schools in Stanley. James was an avid photographer and he loved to swim. His family says that he was quite adventurous. James volunteered as both a swim and basketball coach. He will be dearly missed by many including family, friends and the community he served.

James was preceded in death by his father James William Abernethy.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Mary Elizabeth "Hannah" Abernethy and husband Alvaro Correa and James Cornelius "J.C." Abernethy. James leaves behind his mothers Linda Heath Stamps and husband David and his "other mother" Linda Abernethy. James also leaves behind his brothers John Abernethy and wife Bernice and Scott Dagenhart and wife Billie and many nieces and nephews. Missing their grandfather will be grandsons Casimir Pogorzelski and James Lucas Abernethy.

James will continue to give to others through the Life Share Organization.

A Celebration of Life for James will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday February 26, 2017 at Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church, 113 E. Parkwood Street, Stanley, North Carolina. Reverend Dr. Danny Penny will offer words of encouragement to family and friends who gather to remember James.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday February 2, 2017 at the Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The burial and graveside committal will follow the Celebration of Life Service at Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont.
