James Wallace Brewton, Jr.

WHITE ROCK - James Wallace Brewton, Jr., "Jim" passed away Monday, December 5, 2016. He was born May 20, 1927 in Atlanta, GA. to the late, James Wallace Brewton and Sarah Frances Lee Brewton. He attended R.L. Hope Elementary School and Edmonds High School in Sumter, SC. He graduated from Furman University and earned his Master's degree in Elementary Administration from the University of South Carolina. Jim began his teaching career as a science teacher and tennis coach at Hartsville High School in Hartsville, SC. During 1955 and 1956 he was employed in the engineering laboratory of Westinghouse Plastics. In 1956 he returned to teaching at Orangeburg High School in Orangeburg, SC as a science and mathematics teacher. He became Principal of Cheraw High School in Cheraw, SC and Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County, SC., retiring as an Assistant Superintendent of Education for the South Carolina Department of Youth Services in 1984.
Jim had been a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church since 1971 where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee for many years, served as a Deacon. He was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class (Beau's Boys),Palmetto Woodturners and a member emeritus of the Big Orange Hunt Club, also a Master Gardener for the Clemson Extension Service.
Over the years, Jim had many hobbies including model airplane building, flying, hunting, fishing, carpentry and gardening- for which he won many awards and ribbons at the South Carolina State fair.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Janice Rosson Brewton; son, James W. Brewton, III (Lisa); daughter, Laura Anne Brewton Richardson (Jack); grandchildren, James W. "Jay" Brewton, IV (Rebekah), Joshua Davis Brewton (Erin), John Brewton Richardson (Brett), Julia Ryan Richardson (Julie), Sarah Taylor Sharpless and Gary Neal Sharpless, Jr. He is predeceased by his parents, and a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Brewton Sharpless.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the grandchildren along with Jim Rice, Henderson Guerry, Bill Lewis, Bill Stowman, Charles Miller and the Men's Sunday School Class
The family will receive friends in the chapel of St. Andrews Baptist Church on Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrews Baptist Church with Dr. Ronald Dee Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, SC at 3:00 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Baptist Church, Connie Maxwell Children's Home or a charity of one's choice.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Lowman Home and staff and to the Baptist Hospital and staff for the care given to Jim during this time.
