Obituary for James W. Miller

June 30, 1934 - June 14, 2021
Avon Lake, Ohio | Age 86

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Teacher and Friend

James W. Miller, 86, of Avon Lake, Ohio passed away Monday, June 14, 2021 surrounded by his beloved wife and their five loving daughters. He was born June 30, 1934 in Edgerton, Ohio to parents Marion and Beryl (nee Edwards) Miller.
Jim was an all-around athlete, playing basketball and baseball in both high school and college. He attended Ohio Northern where he earned his bachelor's degree, followed by Kent State University for his master's degree. Most importantly Jim met his future wife, Barbara Warman while at Ohio Northern, and the two eloped on March 30, 1957 in Angola, Indiana.
Jim went on to teach subjects including Physical Education, Biology and Driver's Education in addition to coaching basketball, first at West High then at Collinwood. Jim eventually moved to Avon Lake High School, where he first taught Health then became the Guidance Counselor and always remained a coach, both of basketball and later tennis. He was a beloved mentor to his many students and was fondly known to them as "Doc Miller". As with most educators, Jim continued to learn throughout his life. He was "self-taught" in areas such as tennis, golf, piano, and sailing. Jim retired from Avon Lake City Schools in 1991 after more than 20 years with the district.
Following retirement, Jim continued to keep active with sailing, golf and tennis. He was an active Cleveland sports fan, and worked at the stadiums for the Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers. He enjoyed traveling, and he and Barbara made it to all 50 of the United States. He enjoyed playing card games of all types, especially Euchre, Pinochle, Gin, and Bridge.
Above everything, Jim was dedicated to his family. He always spent time doting on his daughters, was excited to welcome sons-in-law and the male-bonding they brought, and later loved to spend time with his eleven grandchildren, guiding and teaching them the lessons he had learned in life. They enjoyed traveling as a family and spending beach vacations together as often as possible.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Barbara Miller; loving daughters Shelly (Paul) Manway, DeeDee (Paul) Virgei, Holly (Eric) St. Cyr, Barbara "BJ" (Jim) Kantola, and Jodi (Steve) Kay; cherished grandchildren Patrick, Taylor (fiancé Nico), Kyle, Cora (fiancé Chris), Matthew, Anna, Erin (Michael), Heather, Megan, Connor and Mckenna; dear sister Pat (Ray "Mouse") Strouse and sister-in-law Sue Miller. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Joe Miller.
