James Wood Melton, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Wake Med in Raleigh.

He was born on October 31, 1927 in Wayne County, NC. to the late Carl F. Melton and Stella Bordeaux Melton. James served his country during the Korean conflict and was awarded the Bronze Service Star twice. When he returned from service, James began his career with Abbott Laboratories and retired after 24 years of service. He was later known as a Lawn Mower Small Engine Fixit man. He could fix about everything from watches to just about anything with a motor. James was an active member of Peoples Fellowship Baptist Church where he served as usher and Trustee for many years.

He is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Harold and Charles Melton.

James is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rosalie Smith Melton; a daughter, Janice Grencik of Garland, NC; a son, Jeffery Melton of Rocky Mount, NC; 4 grandchildren, David Fields, Jr. of Wilmington, NC, Jamie Fields of Rocky Mount, NC, Spec. James P. Fields of Oklahoma and Jacob Fields and his wife, Jennifer of Wilson, NC; 6 great-grandchildren, Kristina Fields, Megan Taylor, Chelsea Fields, Kammeron Fields and David K. Taylor; a brother, Earl Melton of Birmingham , Alabama; a sister and brother-in-law, Marti and Tom Ritchfield of Oregan.

A visitation will be held on Friday, December 4, 2014 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Peoples Fellowship Baptist Church on Hwy 97 West in Rocky Mount.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the church, with Rev. Dave Grogan, officiating.

Burial will follow in Rocky Mount Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Martha Chesnutt and her staff at the Boice-Willis Clinic in Rocky Mount, for their tender loving care that was provided to James.
